Faux Finish for furniture: The Calvin Cabinet

Faux Finish for Furniture: The Calvin Cabinet
I paint a lot of furniture. As you can see from the photo albums on my website ( www.swanstudio.net ) and media pages (www.google.com/+SwanStudiosIncCapeCoral  and www.facebook.com/swanstudiosinc ) . The projects commissioned range from entire bedroom sets, kitchen cabinets, to small statues. Recently I was asked to paint a “wee little cabinet”. It had been hand crafted many years ago by the family patriarch, Calvin, and passed along to various family members, whoever was in need of furniture at the time. The cabinet needed a fresh finish and a shelf replaced inside. What made this refresh special was the latest recipient was a new family member named after his great grandfather, Calvin.
I lightly sanded the treated wood both inside and out, top coated in deep brown, sanded to distress, then used an antique glaze to further give it an distressed aged appearance. The family’s request was only to make sure that the scratch marks made by a beloved pet could still be seen through this newly-aged faux finish.

I scripted the name Calvin on top

And here’s little Calvin himself next to his great grand-dad’s and now his “Calvin Cabinet".
