Faux Finishing: “What Can Brown Do For You”?

Faux Finishing: “What Can Brown Do For You”?

Companies put some serious dollars into coming up with catchy campaign slogans. Why? Because a catchy phrase helps you identify, remember, and relate to their products so that you buy them. And the best phrases become enveloped into our everyday vocabulary. Admit it, you have repeatedly used the Verizon Wireless slogan ….”Can You Hear Me Now”? We use that for everything. How many remember the days of the now historically famous “Where’s the Beef”? Or Life Alert’s “I’ve Fallen and I Can’t Get Up”? Right now Frosted Flakes is promoting their “Flakes for Fuel, Frosting for Fun campaign”, but come on… we all know their best phrase was Tony the Tiger uttering “They’re G-r-r-reat”! Although UPS retired their campaign slogan “What Can Brown Do For You?” in 2010, every time the UPS truck comes down my road that phrase pops into my head.  So good job UPS! ( to learn more about the benefits of a good campaign slogan: http://smallbusiness.chron.com/importance-ad-slogans-31343.html )

The slogan "What Can Brown Do For You"? popped into my head while I was faux painting for a client based on ...you guessed it- the color brown. The home's interior was warm and tropical. They wanted their entry way to be a stunning feature as guests entered their home , as all good entries should be!

The entry walls are treated with a base of buttery cream topped with a brown glaze treatment. Then I painted on an overlay of tropical foliage using browns and highlighted in copper and bronze. The foliage shapes where derived from the client's wood carved mirror frame.

The foliage was carried onto the archway as you enter into the living area:

The soaring entry ceiling is painted in deep brown metallic with glints of bronze, copper, and golds:

( Once the newly ordered chandelier is in place, I’ll post up a new photo of the ceiling )

Mural Painting: Jammin' To Heavy Metal

Mural Painting: Jammin’ To Heavy Metal

What’s your favorite Heavy Metal group? Black Sabbath? Twisted Sister? Judas Priest? Heavy metal inspires us to kick up our heels…just ask “ Laurel and Hardy” who enjoyed a little AC/DC now and then… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjhyYhFnLgE

Heavy Metal is also the point of inspiration in the mural paintings below. Only this time the "Heavy Metal" isn't of the musical genre, but metal art hangings.

This glorious local Heron is one of the favorites here in Southwest Florida :

Here’s the client’s heavy metal inspiration piece:

Mural Painting: Cowabunga Dude!

Mural Painting: Cowabunga Dude!

It’s only fair that we devote a little bit of time to that adorable creature – the Turtle. After all, we’ve devoted art blogs to dogs, cats, and birds. So today is all about turtles. I love turtles! I have what I call a herd of them at my home on “Baker’s Pond”. Every evening my husband and I visit with our buddies and they’ve gotten to know our voices and many swim right up to us. We’ve given most of them names based on how they act or look. A few examples: “Chip” is the name of a very large turtle, so named because his shell has a chip missing. One turtle is slower than the rest, so we call him “Old Man”. We have a turtle named “Red” because his shell has a reddish tint. And so on, but you get the idea – I love turtles! So I’m always delighted when I’m asked to incorporate these “lizards on the half shell” into mural creations.

These delightful characters were requested for the kid’s bathroom. Many years later after the children had grown and moved on to college, they insisted their parents not paint over them so they could enjoy them when they visited home:

Often when painting a mural I like to put in hidden treasures. These little cuties are all comfy and basking in sunshine in a guest room’s tropical mural:

Mural Painting: What's New Pussycat ?

Mural Painting: What’s New Pussycat?

As promised this week’s art blog is all about cats. Which is only fair since the previous art blog was dedicated to our lovable loyal friend the dog. I’m truly a cat lover (as attested if you’ve ever glanced at my social media pages) I’ve owned cats most of my life. Cats are cuddly furry purring bundles of joy. Granted they have a mind of their own, attitudes, and believe humans are here only to serve them. After all, they’ve been worshiped as gods (http://www.ancientegyptonline.co.uk/cat.html) and I’m pretty sure today’s generation wants us to remember that. But they give love in abundance and fabulous stress reducers. (http://www.examiner.com/article/five-reasons-for-why-having-a-cat-can-help-reduce-your-stress)
Cats have graced art works and paintings through the ages (https://www.brooklynmuseum.org/exhibitions/divine_felines)

I’ve had the opportunity to paint and illustrate both domestic and large wildlife cats for my clients:
