Grapes and Roses

A long stem rose and bottle of wine on a crisp white linen tablecloth conjure up a romantic image. But ever wonder why? Are we all just hopeless romantics? (I know I am) Painters have long used the still life subject of a vase filled with roses in full bloom and luscious grapes draped around. Again, ever wonder why? It’s a practical matter rather than a romantic one. Roses and grapes require the same soil factors and sun. Both are susceptible to the same diseases, but roses are more sensitive. By planting rose hedges around the perimeter of vineyards, the winemakers are alerted of disease in time to adjust. Besides adding to the beauty of the vineyard, the roses provide food for bees and offer habitat for beneficial insects preying on undesirable insects that can damage the grape crop. Out of this practicality, our romantic setting is placed.

Grapes and roses are the theme for a home’s kitchen and sitting area.

 The client wanted a whimsical outline of grapes growing freely around the kitchen lights and to keep the feeling light and airy:

The roses are delicately scattered growing around the sitting area’s ceiling fan. The roses used are inspired from her collection of dishes and vases.

I show Claribel how do to paint a marbleized finish. The home boasted a soaring 25 foot height ceiling in the family room. This allowed for a dark brown marble with copper veining:

Spiffing Up: The Sun War Saga

While we all wait, hope, and pray for peace world-wide, here in SW Florida we are in a constant battle with a force that is both are greatest asset and greatest enemy simultaneously- the SUN. Throngs of people flood into our state continuously to enjoy our gorgeous weather and bask in our glorious sun. And while it grants a fabulous tan and healthy skin glow the sun also drains and fades out colors on EVERYTHING- including our homes’ exteriors. Those expensive sidelights you so painfully selected- they’ll fade out within 1 to 2 years. That cabinet you felt so clever in selecting to keep your pool supplies organized- it’s a goner for sure. Your “just had to have it “ cutesy lawn ornament- forget it-it’s toasted. But never fear your faux artist is here!!!!

The average exterior of a home is painted every 7 to 10 years- supposedly. While it’s true that exterior paints have come a long way and a good quality paint can technically last 15 years, the fact is to keep things looking sharp you’ll need to repaint more often here in SW Florida.  Even if you’ve made sure to keep that lovely green mold off your walls (Thank you very much “Humidity”). Or even if you have been fortunate enough not to have your lower portion of your home have rusty discoloration creeping up it. This is due to oxidized rebar now creeping up through the cracks in the foundation either from improperly poured concrete foundation or thanks to our ever shifting shell bed soil. JOY! -NOT !  Even if none of these things happened to you or maybe they did and you re-painted to keep things fresh and color trendy. There are still other bits that need looking after.

Exterior Houselights:

These side lights were severely weather faded. Now they gleam with a brilliant metallic faux finish:

Sun, wind, rain, and humidity took its toll on these exterior home lights. A silver metallic faux finish brings them back to life:

This PVC lanai cabinet had been sun faded and discolored from humidity. Now it boasts a wood grain faux finish and a tough clear coat.

A Rainbow of White

White is such a dynamic color- or I should say collection of colors- to work with. The color white is the actual presence of all colors simultaneously. No wonder it is so loved by artisans in all fields:

Go in to any paint store and you’ll find more shades of white than any other color. Selecting the correct one for your home’s interior is crucial. The correct white can make your interior look exquisite. On the flip side, the wrong shade can make the room dingy. Your faux artist can help you choose the correct white to perfectly accent your faux finishes. As well as, shades of white can be used to create some gorgeous faux finishes.

Morning Blend

I’ve had the pleasure of painting custom murals and faux finishes in SW Florida for over 20years. So many adventures, customer’s, and creations long the way. A recent adventure had me up 24 feet in the air faux painting a marble finish for a family that was such a delight to get to know. Adding even more excitement to the experience was getting to scare the willies out of my assistant (You’re such a good sport. Jenna) and having a film crew join us for part of the creation. But before we reveal that footage, I thought today we’d take a look back at another filming. This one was for a talk show called Morning Blend.
