Flashing Blue Skies

Flashing Blue Skies
There is beauty everywhere we look. Even if the current days seem dark and scary as every country, state, county, and city is on some level of quarantine and isolation. In fact, as I write this in isolation in my own home in SW Florida, I’m sitting on my lanai listening to my parakeets happily chirp, the pool gurgle, and a breeze ruffling through the trees. The view is beyond glorious with bright sunlight beaming across the canal and lighting up a deliciously blue sky chock full of fluffy marshmallow clouds. And it’s the sky that is once again the inspiration for today’s art focus.
A recent client wanted to give her home an updated color palette with a peaceful serene feel. Golden tan walls were changed to a windswept white. Dark chocolate walls were repainted to peaceful turquoise. And a plain white dining ceiling was faux painted to seem as if the roof was torn away giving a full view of skies above.
Before & After
Before the ceiling was plain white with a harsh brown stripe. The ceiling now sports pearlized blues and creams. An extra effect was added with a coat of Blue Flashing effects paints. When the dining lights are on it gives an ethereal romantic feel to the room:

Going Grey

Going Grey
Amid all the Corona Virus social distancing and self-isolation there has been a flurry of memes on social media from parents with a great sense of humor. The lock down and semi quarantine is offering serious entertainment as they try to keep rambunctious children productively occupied and learning to homeschool.  To say the least, its causing more grey hairs. Going grey isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Especially if its by choice. I’m not referring to hair color. I’m referring to interior colors. Specifically, home accessories. The color of many items in your home can be update to the newest grey color palettes. Here’ s some ideas to inspire you as stare in isolation at your home’s interior:

Almost a decade ago I had the pleasure of changing this adorable photo partition to a copper metallic finish. The home’s interior is now transforming to a current color pallet, so the frame has been updated to match:

New mirrors fit perfectly for this home owners bathroom remodel, but they needed to change from gold to silver :
Decided to photo -bomb : Hi Mom !

Picture Perfect

Picture Perfect
One of the most glorious aspects of living in SW Florida is our sunsets. The majesty of the sky is breathtaking. I’m often asked to paint a sunset beach scene particularly on outside poolside walls. And just like God’s sunset no two are ever truly alike. Taking photos of the vibrant oranges and purples makes for great Instagram posts. The photo taken by the homeowner’s daughter during her visit is the inspiration for this week’s featured mural:

a close up side view shows the realistic feel of the water waves:

Stucco walls are the norm here in SW Florida. I'm often asked if a mural can be painted on to the rough surface. As you can see in this extreme close up...yes, they can. It just takes a little patience:

As I stated earlier, no two sunsets are alike. Here are more examples to inspire you:

Whether you want your own relaxing sunset mural indoors or outdoors, Swan Studios Inc can create your fantasy get away.

Another Brick in the Wall

Another Brick in the Wall
If your home interior style is Gentle Seaside, Funky Beach, Shabby Chic, Urban Loft, or somewhere in between an exposed brick wall is the perfect backdrop for any room. Living in the Southwest Florida area most won’t have real brick. That’s where faux finishing comes in. The proper faux painting looks real and if you’re the touchy- feely kind, you can even have the faux brick created with texture added in.
Here are some exposed bricks to inspire you:
For this office wall, the illusion of brick is painted in reds and browns. The faux grout is textured. Then the faux brick was given a whitewash effect:

This kitchen pass thru features faux grey brick with a plaster treatment troweled on:

Faux red brick gives this Italian restaurant that old world feel:

The home builder created a brick look that was stark white. By faux painting the faux brick the fireplace is now the focal point of the room:

The formerly stark white brick on this home exterior was painted in grey tones then received  a German Schmear treatment:

Even kids can enjoy faux brick walls especially when they have a shark busting through them:

Faux Painting on High Ceilings

Faux Painting on High Ceilings:

The ceiling is probably the most forgotten territory in a home. Even when rooms are delightfully splashed with color and décor, often-times the ceilings remain blank. True they’re utilitarian. But they can be both practical and jaw dropping at the same time. With the right faux finish treatment, a room can become the jewel of the home.

Be inspired. These ceilings steal the show:

This small but tall guest bath ceiling reflects the accent shower tiles  and counter top:
