Today’s “Weathered” Report

Living here in Southwest Florida we are a little obsessed with our weather reports. If you turn on the news, it seems like every 5 minutes they mention something about our weather. Then, of course, there are the all-day weather channels, weather websites, and even weather apps. My husband is from Australia and this little scenario struck him odd when he first arrived here.  I quite often hear him say “My God, Americans are obsessed with their weather” True, at least here in Florida. Most of our day especially the weekends center around beaches, boating, golfing, or even splashing in the swimming pool. As an artist I have to keep an eagle eye on the weather when I’m doing an outdoor mural or faux painting project. And on occasion, like today’s featured project, I’m asked to bring the “weather” indoors.

If you love the smell of sea-spray, the taste of salt in the air, and warmth of sun rays sparkling around you might consider having this faux finish painted into your home as well. The client’s décor is in shades of the beach: sandy whites, driftwood, blue-green sea glass. A feature wall in a fairy tight walk space was crying to be a show stopper. The idea was to make it appear as a wood plank outdoor wall that once upon a time had been painted a seaside blue-green and is now “weathered” by sand, surf, and sun.  The result….Glorious:

Stripping Down to the Buff

Summer is just around the corner. Here in Southwest Florida it feels like it’s already started (If you don’t count the torrential down pours each day since it’s rainy season) But the rain doesn’t cool things off. It just makes it steamier.  All the more reason to strip down and get Buff…. On the walls that is.

Remember the dark floral wall papers of the early 90’s? I can hear the groans, because some of you out there still have it on your walls. Like a recent client of mine. Have mercy! Their beautiful golf course home was stuck in the past. The Master bath was covered in deep forest green wall covering stripped with pink roses. To make matters worse the floor layout made absolutely no sense. The shower was encased in bubble style glass bordered in -you guessed it- brass edges. Which time had turned shades of black, green, and a safe haven for soap scum to ferment in. I was asked to come over and see what could be done...uhm, everything. It started out by stripping the wall paper off. That alone made such a difference. Even painting on primer made the room more glorious.  New floor tiles, new shower tiles, most definitely an all glass frame-less shower walls and doors, new sink and cabinet, accent wall tiles, ripped out a tub no one had ever used in 20 years. (That space is now being used as her seating area but has been painted and tiled so it can easily have a furniture for storage placed later). And the walls? The walls are now faux painted in “Buff” colors. With new neutrals and also- very important- new lighting in daylight bulbs. Now when they get down to the buff the won’t look sickly green! Always keep in mind the type of bulb and the shade of your bathroom walls make all the difference in not only how you look in that room- but ladies if you are doing your make-up in your master bath, the last thing you need to do is put a pale green cast on your face!

Baker’s Pond

It was such a delight painting this fun colorful outdoor mural. My husband and I had christened our home “Baker’s Pond” because of all the wonderful little creatures that live in the canal in our backyard. We’re both animal lovers so, of course, these happy little critters had to be put into the mural. Using exterior grade wood, paint, and clear coat the Baker’s Mural finally came to life.
