Faux Painting: Everything’s Just PEACHY

Yum! August is Peach season. I love the smell of peach cobbler baking in the kitchen. It’s tantalizing and comforting at the same time.  So are the faux finishes recently created for this southwest Florida home. The client’s love for shabby chic mixed with her bright effervescent personality spring boarded the faux finishes for the exterior of her home.

Pavers of cream, peach, and deep coral lead the way to the front door faux painted in a deep coral base, like a peach at its peak of ripeness, and then crackled with dollops of cream:

The door handle had seen better days, so it also received a new faux finish:

This faux silver finish was also carried over onto the home's 3 side lights:

The Garage door received a dual faux finish of bleached out wood grain with crackled and weathered faux finish  in the same shades used on the front door:

What’s Cooking ?!

The kitchen is the heart of the home. It’s where we all gather at the end of the day to discuss our comings and goings. Have a party and invariably a cluster of friends are chatting away in the kitchen enjoying drinks and all the yummy treats that come from the oven. Most homes, at least here in SW Florida, have the kitchen fully open to the family room so families can cook and enjoy their favorite T.V. show all together. And if you’re thinking of selling your home, the kitchen is the room that will make or break the sale. So what do you do if your cabinets are good quality, new, but oh so dark (chosen by the prior owner)? Answer: Have the cabinets faux painted!!!

This kitchen sported mid to dark tone wood cabinets and a fairly low ceiling height. Faux painting the cabinets with a light creamy white just slightly glazed in light brown makes the light, brighter, and more inviting.  

A closer look:

The cabinets received a coat of Bull’s Eye 1-2-3 before painting. The decorative rope finish on the cabinets is great for the glaze accent. The cabinets received a high quality non-yellowing clear coat for protection of the faux finish and for easy clean up in the kitchen. Of course, it’s very important to wear your best paint pants when placing the cabinet doors back in place.

Something Old-Something New….

We’re all familiar with the saying” Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue”-well for today it’s referring to Faux Finishing rather than Bridal advice. Often as a faux painter I’m asked to revive a much loved old piece of furniture and give it a new look. Maybe the décor colors have changed or the piece has experienced some wear and tear over the years. However, faux painting can be just as appropriate for a brand new piece of furniture. Like the wine cabinet featured below. After selecting the piece that worked well in her dining room, the client had it shipped to me for faux painting. Once finished I along with a strong crew member, delivered and assembled her New-Old Wine Cabinet.

The cabinet comes in various pieces at Pier One and can be expanded as needed. The purchased finish however, is a mid to deep tone wood. Although pretty, the client’s home is more a beachy shabby chic look in tones of blues, teals and lavender. For this piece a teal color in some of her fabrics was used as a base color. The results- Gorgeous !!!

Here's a look at the steps for transitioning the furniture color:

These steps were done to each section. For the inserts were the wine bottles will be placed, the dark wood tone was kept and I added just a bit a glazing into the insets. 

Here's another stunning piece. The client purchased an armoire from Norris furniture in a light dream color. The piece has been given a beautiful aged worn look.
