Faux Painting: Urban Decay- the New Shabby Chic

Faux Painting: Urban Decay- the New Shabby Chic

I love my job! Art is my passion, which makes work more like playtime! Every day is a new adventure. Today’s art-blog features an adventure that was such a delight to create. The home owner had a penchant for shabby chic, loves the latest grey palette in décor, and had recently moved into a home with a slight modern edge….so enter “Urban Decay”. The whole thing spring boarded in the dining area, which in typical Southwest Florida fashion is open to the central living room and kitchen. Using the dining area’s art piece above the dry bar as inspiration, the focal wall is now a reinterpretation on a grand scale. The sculpted artwork goes wall to wall and floor to ceiling.

Starting with a base paint in a soft black, the wall is sculpted in a series of low luster metallic plasters. Recreating the original art piece’s texture was a creative exercise since they had the luxury of standard sculpting tools. But with a bit of ingenuity and a lot of duct tape I built the oversize interpretations using paint brush ends, stir sticks, foam rollers wrapped in cellophane, and even a little backhanded finger sculpting. Whatever it took….the end result is spectacular!

The ceiling tray in the main area is gently faux painted in soft grays, whites, and flashes of the same silver that is coated on sections of the sculpted wall:

The entry foyer is faux treated in layers of grays and silvers. Light sculpting gives gentle decay look, revealing a silver metallic wall beneath:

The entry ceiling and niche are faux finished to resemble tarnished silver.:

Of course, what’s a little decay without a little bling! The guest water closet is painted in wavy stripes of metallic silver over a dark grey base. Extra sparkle is added by topping each silver stripe with silver mica chips sandwiched between layers of a clear gloss urethane.
