Faux Painting: Let There Be Light

Faux Painting: Let There Be Light

“And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. 4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.      Genesis 1:3 KJV

Lighting is extremely important to interior design. Yet it is often the last aspect thought of for a room when, in fact, it should be considered very early on. Come on, even God Himself chose lighting first!!! Lighting can create a mood for a room, it can carve out how a room functions, and choosing the right spectrum bulb will ensure your paint colors stay true. Years back I had painted a home office in a toasty golden color perfect for the tropical global travel theme. But when the wrong light bulb was put into the overhead light the whole room turned pea green!!!
What about the light fixture itself? A lamp or chandelier can be the perfect size and shape for the space, but the finish may not necessarily fit into the room’s décor. That’s where a faux artist comes in. Here’s how I tackled this challenge for some of my clients:

This adorable tropical lamp started out cream bisque. Now he can flaunt himself in full color. The lamp was painted using acrylics and then with an antique glaze:

The floor lamp chosen by the designer functioned perfect in the spot, but the stark white post didn't fit with aged finish on the furniture. Now that 3 shades ranging from light taupe to deep brown have been applied, it does:

The previously yellow lamp blended into the wall's faux finish. Changing it to bright red the matched the toile fabric on the bed skirt gives it just the punch it needed:

This dinette chandelier started out as brushed nickel. I sprayed a metallic brown and then hand rubbed a metallic black/brown mix to mimic the oil rubbed bronze finish of the homes ceiling fans:

I painted the leaf motifs of these antique chandeliers onto the ceiling to add more character to the ceiling mount:

Adding a deep dark faux finish to formerly white ceiling medallions gives these light fixtures the grandiose they need:
