Faux Painting: Let it Faux! Let it Faux! Let it Faux!
Faux Painting: Let it
Faux! Let it Faux! Let it Faux!
It’s that glorious
time of year when we celebrate the magical world of freshly falling snow! ...Except
those of us who glory in the fact that we live in Southwest Florida and there
is delightfully not a snow flake to be found! There is just massive amounts of beautiful
sunshine and sandy beaches!
The Southwest Florida coast encompasses Cape Coral, Fort
Myers, Estero, Bonita Springs, Naples, Marco Island, Pine Island, and of
course, Sanibel and Captiva. So if your shivering in frigid air, check out some
of places to explore : http://www.fodors.com/world/north-america/usa/florida/the-lower-gulf-coast While you’re here, you’ll also notice a blend of
Tropical and Tuscan influences in our architecture for both indoors and
outdoors, the perfect canvas for faux painting. Every time I hear the seasonal winter song Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDQoWT7W5xg….
My artist head hears Let it Faux, Let it
Faux, Let it Faux!
Quite often in a
homeowner’s exuberance to embrace our tropical and Tuscan influences, they’ll
attempt to paint their own walls and only to discover they really needed a
professional faux artist to create what they actually had in mind.
a closer look at the guest bath walls:
The home owner originally painted the master bath a bright terra cotta, only to discover it was way to bright for the small space. Then they attempted to spray paint brown over it to "faux" it......DO NOT do this! Besides not giving even coverage, it can be dangerous to use canned spray paint in places without proper ventilation.
a closer look at corrected wall color and finish:
A formerly deep red
and gold dining room ceiling is now corrected to a tasteful subtle neutral
faux:

Faux Painting: The "Wow" Factor
Faux Painting: The “Wow”
Factor
Fabulous- Gorgeous- “Wow”
certainly describes this project in Pelican Preserve. The home owner’s entry and living areas were
previously a muted creamy yellow and they were ready for an updated pallet and
a request to make the entry have a “wow” factor. The sophisticated rage for
taupe to greige ( a color somewhere between grey and beige) laid the soft
foundation for the general population of the walls. The deep teal accent color
was spring boarded from their glass bottle collections, art carving, and a
painting acquired in their travels. Now the entry says “wow” and the art pieces
“pop”:
The entry’s round tray ceiling is painted in a
deep teal over-laid with deep metallic teal ( artist's own creation ) and then a layer of warm metallic
grey. The walls are fauxed in varying shades of taupe and warm grey allowing a
base of deep teal to peek through. Bright white trim is used for the trim:

The side wall faux
finish technique of the entry is used on an accent wall in the sitting area,
giving the carved wood pieces a fabulous back drop:
The deep teal is used above the kitchen cabinets and under the chair rail in the breakfast/kitchen tech center:

with the home owner in helping re-set wall pieces after painting is finished:

Faux Painting: Let There Be Light
Faux Painting: Let
There Be Light
“And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. 4 And God saw
the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.5 And
God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and
the morning were the first day. Genesis 1:3 KJV
Lighting is extremely
important to interior design. Yet it is often the last aspect thought of for a
room when, in fact, it should be considered very early on. Come on, even God
Himself chose lighting first!!! Lighting can create a mood for a room, it can
carve out how a room functions, and choosing the right spectrum bulb will
ensure your paint colors stay true. Years back I had painted a home office in a
toasty golden color perfect for the tropical global travel theme. But when the
wrong light bulb was put into the overhead light the whole room turned pea
green!!!
What about the light fixture itself? A lamp or chandelier can
be the perfect size and shape for the space, but the finish may not necessarily
fit into the room’s décor. That’s where a faux artist comes in. Here’s how I
tackled this challenge for some of my clients:
This adorable tropical lamp started out cream bisque. Now he can flaunt himself in full color. The lamp was painted using acrylics and then with an antique glaze:
The floor lamp chosen by the designer functioned perfect in the spot, but the stark white post didn't fit with aged finish on the furniture. Now that 3 shades ranging from light taupe to deep brown have been applied, it does:
The previously yellow lamp blended into the wall's faux finish. Changing it to bright red the matched the toile fabric on the bed skirt gives it just the punch it needed:
This dinette chandelier started out as brushed nickel. I sprayed a metallic brown and then hand rubbed a metallic black/brown mix to mimic the oil rubbed bronze finish of the homes ceiling fans:
I painted the leaf motifs of these antique chandeliers onto the ceiling to add more character to the ceiling mount:
Adding a deep dark faux finish to formerly white ceiling medallions gives these light fixtures the grandiose they need:
