Sophisticated Luxury

 Sophisticated Luxury

Today’s modern plasters offer a wide variety of finishes for faux art creations. As a faux artist they are an absolute delight to paint with. Customer’s are thrilled at the luxurious look and quality of their walls.  Pearl, high gloss, matte, textured or butter smooth plaster paints give plastering a whole new contemporary edge.

For this master bath remodel, a combination of pearl deco and textured Lusterstone were used in shades of gentle white:

A variety of finishes and gleams in shades of white, cream, and soft grey make these guest baths feel luxurious :

Shades of brown, cinnamon, and gold Lusterstone were used to create the backdrop for this art work turning the whole hallway into a work of art:

Coastal Cottage Faux Finish

Coastal Cottage Faux Finish

Nothing beats a day at the beach! Even if that day has to be spent indoors. Might as well bring the outdoors into the Indoors with some fabulous fun “beachy” feel furnishings. You don’t even have to buy new furniture. Re- purposing your own furniture pieces is both economical and adds to the whimsy of creating a coastal oasis.

For this home’s interior, which is literally mere steps away from our gorgeous gulf coast shoreline, the owner’s wood hutch is transformed to bring the feel of blue skies and salty air indoors.

A light sanding removes the clear coat off the existing finish. A primer assures the grip of the new color ( I usually use Bulls Eye 1-2-3 ) The home’s door had been painted with SW6811 Honorable Blue. To keep consistency, the same color was applied to the hutch. Next, 2 coats of white wash were applied.

Then for a time and weather beaten feel, a little more sanding was done along the edges and corners.

The piece will be used frequently and since our air done here in sunny southwest Florida is humid, a hard clear coat was a must. In this case, I used CV500 UV Urethane Dull.

How High is the Sky?

How High is the Sky?

Exactly how high is the sky above earth? It may surprise you to know that it is a mere 3 and half hours from the earth to the edge of space. That is, if Amtrak were running straight up and you could handle the spin action needed. 250 miles after leaving terra firma you will be at the top of earth’s sky. However, today’s featured sky murals are only 14ft – 16ft in height. A little climb up some scaffolding and with the help of sea sponges, large chip brushes, latex paints, and acrylics paints…tada! 2 lanais now feature the sky on their ceilings.

This ceiling is in a courtyard lanai. It’s segmented into 3 areas. The immediate entrance, the center portion-which is the largest section, and a separate area above an outdoor living room seating section:

The above ceiling is an accompaniment to the beach mural created for the courtyard pool:
The Beach Mural is featured at 7 Little Cockle Shells All in a Row

The sky being such a popular request, I had back to back sky murals commissioned. So basically 2 weeks spent off the ground. This one was painted for a fellow artist. We had so much hanging out together, mixing paints, chattering non-stop that it was more like play than work. Which is how life should be!

Mile Marker 73.5

Mile Marker 73.5

We all have special places we love to visit and long to be. Or perhaps more than one home that holds a piece of our heart or favorite memories. A recent outdoor beach mural was a celebration of two homes near and dear to the homeowners. The mural is painted onto the first main property and graces the backyard. That home is the one they raised their daughters in. It had horses, dogs, cats, pigs, and even chickens. The daughters are now all grown up and on their own. The horses and pigs have moved on. But cats, dogs, and chickens remain, I even got to hold one! (see end of article) The girls will be returning soon since one of them will be holding her wedding on the property. Thus, why the backyard is getting gussied up. The mural will be a fabulous backdrop in the photos. Within the photo there is an image of a mile marker. That marker holds special meaning. It indicates the other property and home they have for vacations. While painting the customer shared tales of their adventures there. It’s heart warming to see family ties run deep. I’m honored that a piece of my art work will be in the background of their next family mile marker.

Painted on the exterior backside of a garage under cover :

There is a door on the backside that leads into the garage:

Adorable sandpipers:

Of course, we all love our dolphins:

A pelican sits on top of the mile marker:

Another request was to have one of our summer storm clouds that seem to always accompany the setting sun:

Do a Little Foxtrot in the Kitchen

Do a Little Foxtrot in the Kitchen

The kitchen is the heart of the home. We eat, gather, have family meetings, and if you’re anything like my family- you dance while cooking. One of my mom’s dance numbers while twirling a dish towel to Elvis Christmas tunes has been a classic. The number even includes my sisters and myself as back up dancers. However, today’s “Foxtrot “is actually a color rather than a 4/4 timed step through the kitchen.

Previously dark stained cabinetry now features a wonderful off-white color called Foxtrot by Valspar and then gently glazed with a color called Hubble House Clayo.

Cabinetry receives a clear coat protection for ease of cleaning

7 Little Cockle Shells All in a Row

7 Little Cockle Shells all in a Row

This year has been blessed with a stream of beach murals on privacy walls around lanais and pools. Homeowners are spending more time vacationing and “stay-cationing” in their own homes and maintaining social distancing from crowded beaches. Of course, they still crave the beauty that is SW Florida. Cerulean blue skies with angelic white clouds or perhaps sunset with brilliant orange and purple along with sparkling water. Having a mural scene depicting a tranquil getaway is not only beautiful to look at but gives the soul much needed rest from the craziness that is the outside world today. Mural paintings which were once a “want” are actually now a “need”. I’m honored each time to give through art these needed moments of peace and happiness. Each mural is uniquely painted and most often incorporates objects that have a particular or special meaning to the homeowner. A recent mural is no exception. The client had specific instructions of items to be included that represented and held special meaning to them.

I’m titling this one “7 Shell Beach “:

Yes, there are more than 7 shell objects in the mural, but I was instructed to have a row of 7 shells specifically. Each shell represents one of the homeowner’s children:

Another specific and fun request was to have 5 seagulls painted into the mural. Of course, seagulls in the are common but these were to represent the grandchildren. My personal favorite is the seagull with mouth wide open and wings flapping. Hey, there’s one in every family, right?

Celebrating a loved filled marriage, two beach chairs were to be painted into the mural. Her chair reflecting her love for collecting shells. And a near by tree is carved with their initials:
