Solid as a Rock

Solid as a Rock
Natural Rock features are showing up everywhere. They are a beautiful way to create texture and interest for focal walls in family rooms, kitchens, dining rooms, bed rooms, and even on the exterior. A stunning quartz wall is featured in a home’s full interior makeover on my art blog titled “ The 7 Year Itch”

Excavated rocks were used and some even painted for pool waterfall on the blog " Between a Rock and a Hard Place" https://swanstudiosinc.blogspot.com/2014/11/faux-painting-between-rock-and-hard.html

A drop-dead gorgeous wall was created for a master head board wall in the article " If you Live in a Glass House-Throw Stones" https://swanstudiosinc.blogspot.com/2017/06/if-you-live-in-glass-house-throw-stones.html

Today's rock feature wall, however, has its own twist... No rocks are used. They are all faux painted. Perhaps a better term , in this case, would be "Trompe L'oeil"( to fool the eye ):

Creating faux rocks gives way to painting with different techniques and mediums Rocks come in such yummy varieties of depths and textures. Some rocks are smooth, some rough, some dead flat in finish, and some twinkle as light bounces across them. Here's a close look at the rocks:

For the “grout” a mixture of fine sand medium, latex paint, and full body medium was troweled and painted on. The last step for the rocks was to create a subtle shadow edge to give an even more realistic feel. The end result--- It totally “Rocks”:

The home owner’s cat, Sophie, loves it so much she insisted on being in the photos :

I Saw Three Ships

I Saw Three Ships
One of my favorite carols when I was a little girl was Nat King Cole’s version of “I Saw Three Ships”. Maybe it was my favorite because I loved hearing his velvety voice gently singing through our GE console stereo. Or perhaps, more likely, because while his album played I could smell the delicious aroma of Christmas cookies my mom was baking in the kitchen. Whatever the reason, it is a delightful memory. A memory I recently revisited while painting a scene that involves three ships.
I’ve written before how much it means as an artist to be requested to paint scenes or decorative pieces that have a deep personal meaning to the client.  Some requests are sweet, like painting a newborn’s name onto furnishings. Some requests are funny. I was commissioned to paint a tropical scene reflecting a client’s favorite vacation spot, but it also had to include the capuchin monkey that had bitten her. Some requests leave a deep emotional mark. I was commissioned to paint a favorite fairytale scene for a toddler, so she could see it before she had surgery to remove cancer that would require removing her eyes. I take these requests very seriously and they each have a special place in my heart. There’s great joy in painting something that brings another person pleasure. There’s also a joy in honoring someone with a creation.  The scene with three ships encompasses all of that.
A friend’s father worked endless hours assembling replicas of famous ships. These ships are constructed to the smallest detail. Even the parts inside that you can only see if you were to remove the outer portions. The rigging of the sails is strung in the same fashion as the ships they are modeled after. I was told one of the ships had over eleven hundred hours poured into it. These ships were more than just a hobby. These ships kept their father’s mind occupied during the painful struggles he had to endure at the end of his earthly journey. Three of these ships were brought here to SW Florida. I was requested to paint a New England sea port scene, so the ships could be mounted into the scene. With the joy of art brushes in hand and a glorious 23-foot-wide canvas before me, I painted while Nat King Cole echoed in my head.

A panoramic view:
For durability , as well as, ease of touch ups if ever necessary, the sea portion is painted using latex and glazing. The sky is in various layers of latex, glaze, and acrylics to create textural depth.

Of course, a lighthouse would be needed in the scene:
Acrylics were used for finer detail work.

The left side seaport and seaside chapel:

Nautical braces were chosen to add stability to the shelves :

I would like to think that  the client's father is looking down and enjoying this sea port scene with his beautifully crafted ships.

In memory of Raymond Shirk:

Heaven Came Down

Heaven Came Down
As an artist each job is a joy to create for my clients. Some jobs, however, are truly precious and meaningful. Recently I had been called to consult with a committee who had been tasked with a revamp and extension of their church building. They had contacted me because of my expertise in faux finishing. The idea had been brought about to modernize a portion of the sanctuary with contemporary faux finishes. I was disappointed when the deacon board told the committee the funds would have to go to some crucial infrastructure work instead. It wasn’t so much a disappointment of not getting the job, I knew that spot would fill immediately. But I was looking forward to painting in God’s House. It made me sad that the project wasn’t moving forward.  We’ve all heard the sayings - “The Lord works in mysterious ways” and “When one door closes, another door opens.” And that’s just what happened. As a woman of faith, I pray daily, several times a day. Sometimes, all day. In our daily talks, I told God how disappointed I was not to be making something for His house. Then I received a call from someone whose path had crossed with mine in a different artistic way. Besides painting, I also work in digital art and film editing. And this author needed a graphic artist for their new edition of their book on the gifts of the Holy Spirit. I was elated. And, as God had planned, it just so happened my schedule had an opening. God is truly great. I am truly blessed.

When I’m notified of the release date of this recent edition, I’ll be sure to post it here on the Swan Studios Inc blog spot. But with great joy, here’s a look at the new cover:

Right on the heels of the book cover came a mural project that needed a little chapel in the landscape. The mural project is still in progress, but here's a sneak peek:

In Remembrance of 9-11

In Remembrance of 9-11

This weekend we honor and remember those fallen and those who bravely ran towards the burning and collapsing twin towers on 9-11-2001. We also honor and give thanks to  those men and women who nobly put their lives on the front line as they continue to fight and protect our freedom. May we live our lives worthy of your sacrifice.
God Bless America - Let Freedom Reign
