Bumping up the Curb Appeal

I gladly admit I’m addicted to home improvement shows both for indoors and outdoors. Seems a lot of people all, after all there are entire networks dedicated to just that. But even if you have never watched a single episode, you still know how important curb appeal is to a property. Curb appeal can make or break a sale of a property. So it’s now wonder I’m often requested to faux paint on the exterior to elevate the surfaces to something grand in marble or wood.  Garage doors look absolutely yummy when painted to give the appearance of wood. In most cases the garage doors start out plain white or beige tone. This next set of 6 doors, however, started out previously faux painted but had become chalky. Additional steps are required to prep the surfaces when this happens. In the case below the doors were first washed down, layers that were bubbled up were removed, the doors were sanded, and rewashed with denatured alcohol before beginning the first steps of the new finish. If your garage door is in good condition, you can start with a good alcohol rub down before having primer painted on. Living in the gloriously brilliant Southwest Florida sunshine and humidity it is imperative to have the proper exterior paints and mediums to create the wood looks. The wrong paints become…you guessed it: Chalky. The right paints become -FABULOUS:

Mural Painting: Sunrise-Sunset

The glory of the sky bursting in an array of golden oranges, rosy to hypnotizing purples, serene and even surreal shades of blues makes me feel humble. Every day the Heavens put on a spectacular art installation for us and all we need to do is sit back and enjoy it.  Even as I write this morning my favorite star, the Sun, is teasing me with sparkling flashes through the blinds. I guess it knows I’m talking about it today. Living on the Gulf side of Florida we are privy to some of the most divine views as the sun sets each evening and puts on its formal wear. It is no wonder that the topic of the suns rising and setting is requested for murals.

Faux Painting: Totally Plastered

I love getting Blitzed - Juice Up - and Totally Plastered---- on Venetian Plaster that is!

Just to clarify, Venetian plaster is general term and the looks range from highly polished and reflective to jagged and rugged. True, a plaster can take some time, but the results are so worth it. I’m thrilled that today there is such a wide range of plasters available for artists to create faux finishes. I spend time creating samples for my clients and most weekends can be found “concocting” some new-fangled idea that has popped into my head. More than once I have heard a product rep ask, “You want to do what”?

It’s always super exciting when a client is ready to plunge into uncharted territory of a new concept for plaster.  The projects below were created for some delightful fun clients and had my artist heart doing hand springs of joy

Walking into the Art:

A hallway formally just used as a passage from garage to main living area is now an exciting transition. The idea sprung from the home-owners artwork. Several shades of plaster were troweled, sanded, tinted, pounded, and brushed to recreate the background full scale onto the hallway walls. Now it feels as if you’ve walked directly into the painting.
