Mural Painting: Florida Middle School Part 1: Hallways

Children are our most precious asset, resource, and joy! I recently had the honor of painting for Lehigh Acres Middle School. http://lhm.leeschools.net/  The school’s mission “is to prepare all students for academic success and responsible citizenship by inculcating and encouraging in them a love for lifelong learning; and build a commitment to positive, moral decision-making.” 

The school utilizes the Avid program (http://www.avid.org/ ) with WICOR methodology http://avid.org/dl/hed/hed_reviewofliterature.pdf  and the Leader In Me ( http://www.theleaderinme.org/the-7-habits-for-kids ) program to give the students the tools to reach their college and life goals.

Mural Painting: Florida Wildlife Goes Poolside!

Southwest Florida is home to amazing wildlife. Florida boasts glorious colorful birds, fabulous fish, and of course the fear inducing gator. Several of these wonderful creatures are incorporated into this week’s tropical mural and they've decided to go poolside! Florida is chock full of pools and what better way to enjoy a refreshing dip away from the heat than swimming next to an alligator!

A popular home layout is southwest is the courtyard home, which allows for complete privacy from neighbors. However, the result is the view is now cold hard stucco. I’m often asked to create a custom mural for these walls. It makes the courtyard pool the envy of the home.

Faux Painting: A New England Bedroom in SW Florida

It is no surprise that people from all over the U.S. flock to sunny Southwest Florida every winter. Some are brief tourists and others become seasonal residents. We call them Snowbirds.

 Often both of those become permanent residents. So we are a collective group all with a love for the Sunshine State. Painting for people from varied places and backgrounds makes my job as a faux painter even that much more fun. I have to admit, I love our New Englanders, they are friendly loving people (and they have great seafood too). I recently painted a New Englander’s Florida bedroom in tones from her own state. She had selected New England style furnishings and wanted to use her cherished art pieces in her bedroom. One painting created by a friend as a reproduction of a Monet and another in the same colors that reminded her of her children when they were young. The dusky cadet blues and periwinkle blues of those paintings are now interpreted onto the Master Bedroom ceiling and Master Bathroom walls.

Faux Painting: Credenza Conversion

Faux painting furniture is a fantastic way to give it new life and new purpose. The color possibilities and styles are endless. As any faux artist can attest it’s rare we have time to make a creation for our own use. November and December were packed with faux finish and mural painting commissions. But somehow along the way I’m delighted I squeezed time in to convert an oak credenza that had served as a dining buffet in my mom’s house into a dry bar for my darling fiancé. A retired Navy man, he has several bottles given to him from various ships and events in his life and they needed a proper place to be both stored and displayed.

The credenza disassembled to receive faux treatments:

 The counter top and door insets were stained in dark distressed wood tones. The body of the credenza received a deep bronze base with blue-green top coat with slight crackling and heavy distressing:

After faux painting is complete, furniture pieces receive a clear protective coating.

Bright blue skies and clear green-blue waters immediately come to mind when you think of the Caribbean. Clients of mine had recently moved from Jamaica to our own paradise here in southwest Florida. They brought with them some delightful paintings created by Jamaican artists. One of the largest pieces featured the Sky meeting the Sea held together by a zipper. The colors where spectacular and were the inspiration for an entire room to be wrapped in a mural of tranquility:
