The ABCs and the 123s

The importance of education cannot be over emphasized. We are blessed to live in a nation that believes in education for every person regardless of skin color, nationality, gender, or religion. Hard to believe that there was a time when little girls weren’t attending schools. Or that there was a time when people weren’t allowed to learn to read based on their skin color. Although there is current turmoil and debate in our education system, “we’ve come a long way , baby”. I’ve been blessed to paint mural works throughout many of our Lee County schools. Recently though I was tasked with showing support for our local educators in murals outside the school walls. A local ice cream shop, Love Boat Ice Cream, asked me to create a series of “Front-Liners” murals. Meaning those on the front-line including military, first responders, and educators. Here is the latest section representing our incredible teachers and instructors:

Honoring those Who Protect and Serve

A few weeks ago, I posted a mural tribute to the brave men and women in our U.S. military. The overall mural itself has two sides. The first portion is dedicated to our military, the second portion is dedicated to those that serve on the front line here at home; law enforcement, firefighters, healthcare , and education. Today’s focus is on law enforcement.

For the Love Boat Ice Cream location in Cape Coral, Florida located at 1523 NE Pine Island Road, the law enforcement portion includes the badge number of a family member of a prior owner : 

The Love Boat Ice Cream located in downtown FT Myers at 1512 Hendry Street includes the badge number of fallen officer Adam Jobbers Miller:

For their location at 7977 Dani Drive both the police department and sheriff’s department are represented in the mural:

In upcoming articles, I’ll post the other area of the murals. For today, I  just want to thank our brave men and women who protect and serve our glorious piece of paradise here in SW Florida.

Dachshund Beach at Sunset

The glory of the setting sun is one of the most captivating aspects of living in Southwest Florida. The sky in all its majesty literally glows most every evening in brilliant oranges, yellows, various shades of blue, and almost indescribable violets. It is both awe striking and humbling. The sky can be so dazzling that drivers pull over on their commute home just to gawk into the Heaven above. It was exciting to be commissioned to paint a beach scene with the sky lit as sunset. But then came the added request of painting in the homeowner’s miniature dachshund into the scene. Oh, my gracious, what a sweet little puppy. Bonnie is just barely a year and a half old and full of wiggles and puppy kisses. Which made having her sit for posing – um, interesting, let’s say. A few photo snaps were managed enough to have something to work by. It was a great way to start this year’s mural series.

 Military Tribute Mural at Love Boat Cape Coral, FL

Love Boat Ice Cream has opened a new location in Cape Coral, Fl. Located in the new plaza at the NW side at the intersection of Del Prado and Pine Island. This is their latest location. You can also find them on San Carlos as you head out to Fort Myers Beach, on Dani Rd in Ft Myers, and downtown Ft Myers on Hendry street.

The Cape Coral location continues their dedication theme to our military and "front liners".

Today's focus is on the military tribute mural side. Dedicated to the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard and Space Force. The background is an abstract American flag. Int. Latex with glaze Double Lapis HGSW1371 is used to create the blue field. The blacks are in Int. Latex Tri-Corn Black SW6258. The yellow for the Army Star and band are in Int. Latex Valspar Sunny Jonquil. The balance of colors are in acrylics.

An aquarium in a home has many health benefits. It can lower blood pressure and reduce stress. But what do you do when there’s also cats, dogs, and kids running around? Instead of installing an aquarium you have one painted. You don’t have to worry about remembering to feed the fish. You don’t have to change the water and filters. And the cats won’t bother the sweet little aquatic creatures. 

This home’s “aquarium” is painted under the kitchen counter. It’s viewable from the dining area, family room, and the lanai:

Another advantage to having a custom painted underwater mural is that the client’s favorite koi that lives in the outdoor pond can be painted into the underwater scene: 

Once the mural is dry a clear coat is painted over it to protect it. For the above mural, Modern Masters Supreme Clear in satin was used.
