The Glory of the Sunset Sky

The sky at sunset in SW Florida has to be one of the most spectacular views on earth. At sunset the sky radiates in bursts on yellow , orange, magenta, cyan, and violet. True our daytime sky  is glorious and almost always a bright baby blue with perfect fluffy white clouds. But it pales in comparison to our evening sky. So, it is no surprise when I’m commissioned to paint a beach scene mural that the request is for the sky to be at sunset.

Serenity Lotus

Our homes are our sanctuary. Our homes are a place for peace, love, tranquility, and often an escape form a maddening world. Artwork in the home plays a large role in reflecting the inner peace

we’re striving to achieve. Perhaps the peace comes from artwork depicting nature for someone trapped daily in an office setting. Or the artwork is bursting with color to escape the dull gray work.

Whatever the goal or reason it’s always a joy to help clients achieve their artwork desires.

A client in the process of updating her home on an incredible property in Manasota Key is remodeling a lounge area into a reading room.  Her love for the lotus flower, sometimes referred to as the water lily, and her collection of Asian art pieces was the launching pad for a commissioned painting for the room. The request for the art piece was to combine Impressionism and Realism, the tranquility of water, and the pink lotus flower.

The painting titled” Serenity Lotus” is on stretched canvas 30” x 30” with the images painted first in acrylics and then troweled in clear plaster. The result is gentle, peaceful, and serene:

A Sliver of Silver

A Sliver of Silver

Silver metallics are everywhere today in interior accents. Sometimes it’s the furniture finish, sometimes art sculptures, or even in drapery fabric. Today the touch of silver metallic is peeking out from the walls.

The mirror like finish of silver plaster bring light into an otherwise dark space.

This dining space have overhead lighting. The slivers of silver allow both the side lamps and the light from and adjacent slider to reflect into the room:

The effect was created using Faux Effects Palette Deco in Silver. Once dried, the wall was plastered with Modern Masters Venetian plaster in Sherwin Williams Aquaverde. Aquaverde is also painted onto the tray ceiling :

Don't Worry...Eat Curry

Here’s a fun colorful mural just completed for Lal’s Caribbean Roti & Curry LLC. The character concept was created a few years ago. Now this sassy turban wearing flamingo enticing people to come enjoy Lal’s amazing curry dishes:

The front side was painted a few years ago and features the tasty menu. It now sports the new addition of the flag of Suriname when the countertop pass through is closed:

Of course, the beach scene continues onto the hitch side along with Lal’s contact information:

You’ll find Lal’s Roti & Curry all around Lee County at various venues. Be sure to take a photo when you see the truck on the road and tag Lal’s and Swan Studios Inc.

Among the Lily Pads

 Among the Lily Pads 

Water features bring a feeling of peace and tranquility to our lives. The gentle splashing sound of water relaxes us. Most often here in SW Florida those water features are added to our pools. (And at the end I’ll show you a water feature painted for a pool) Occasionally, however, water features are stand-alone fountains. Perhaps water rippling across stones or spouting from a quirky bright fish or flamboyant bird. In today’s case, it is an antique fountain made in the image of a beautiful young woman in flowing robes sitting amongst lily pads as water cascades down.  

The beloved fountain had faded over the years and appeared more bisque beige than full of life. 

The first step was to dry out the statue and remove any mold. Then it was given a prime coat. (I used Bulls Eye 1-2-3). Outdoor acrylics were necessary since the fountain resides on the homeowner's lanai. 

Once the acrylics were dry a satin clear coat was painted on it. I’m fond of the tenacity of the C500 UV by Faux Effects. 

The change is a night and day difference: 

 

As promised, here’s a look at a water feature that’s crafted to look like natural rock with a waterfall flowing into a pool. The rock formations are painted to look like- well, rock.
