You Crack Me Up

You Crack Me Up
“You Crack Me Up” – I say that to my husband all the time because he does! It’s one of his most endearing qualities. Ask any woman and they’ll tell you a sense of humor is in the top 5 of things we look for in our man. Laughter is good for the soul. Laughter is good for your health. A good, hearty laugh relieves physical tension and stress, leaving your muscles relaxed for up to 45 minutes after. Laughter boosts the immune system. So I guess you could say today’s art blog is about being healthy because the clients were laughing with delight when I “cracked them up”.in this case the “cracking” is actually Crackle Faux Finish.

Crackle faux painting is a classic. And with today’s products, any color combination is possible. The unending color combinations allow crackle faux finish to be used in a variety of decorating schemes. It can fit itself into rustic, traditional, shabby-chic, Mediterranean, tropical, urban, modern- the list goes on and on. Crackle paint can be used on walls, ceilings, furniture, and cabinetry. It can be used for both interior surfaces and exterior surfaces.

For a home transitioning from a heavy traditional interior to a sleek line interior, the guest powder room is painted with a metallic silver base coat and crackle with a creamy white topcoat:

Crackle faux finish is perfect for small furniture pieces like these chairs:

But is equally perfect for larger furniture pieces like this credenza:

Crackle painting is a great way to change built in cabinetry:

Boring white doors are transformed to a gorgeous entry with crackle faux painting:

Beam Me Up!!!

Beam Me Up

I admit I’m an avid Star Trek fan. This year the shows celebrates its 50th Anniversary. Star Trek made its first appearance in September 1966. It lasted only three seasons but its impact has been felt throughout the universe and remains a cult favorite among us die hard Sci-Fi fans and film makers. Here’s another piece of trivia…. The phrase, “Beam Me Up, Scotty” was never actually said on the television series. There were variations in a few of the shows. But it wasn’t until the audio recording of William Shatner’s novel “Star Trek: The Ashes of Eden” that the phrase was said. And that’s the phrase that caught on, became the title of James Doohan’s autobiography (he played Scotty on Star Trek), and inspired today’s art blog title. Only these art beams aren’t transportation particles but real beams. OK, not “real” beams. They are faux beams.

To incorporate this kitchen counter with the homes tropical interior, it now sports beams in a herringbone pattern:

For a home with a seaside interior theme, I painted this table top to mimic planks of gray bleached out wood:

More wood looks are available in the photo gallery at my website: www.swanstudio.net

The Blue Period

The Blue Period
Going Monochromatic has long been a tool used to bring elegance into a home’s interior. A monochromatic palette in a room actually makes us feel peaceful and relaxed. If you’ve been keeping up with current trends, then you are fully aware that Blue is definitely having its moment to grace some of the most stylish homes.  Even in its most abstract or avant-garde, blue gives a room a gentle peaceful feel.  And rather than trendy, a monochromatic blue room becomes classic.

Happily channeling my inner Milton-Resnick (click here to learn more about the abstract expressionist Milton-Resnick 1917-2004: https://www.artsy.net/artist/milton-resnick ) and using the client’s own art piece  easily purchased at City Furniture( you’ve probably seen the piece used in their T.V. ads) , I created my own abstract expression. Starting with a Brilliant Blue base additional shades of indigo, pale blue, and dusky teal blue are blended in in undulating wave motions. The result: The whole entire wall back drop is now the art piece. Originally I thought the wall would serve to expand the canvas piece. But once painted, and doing my inner happy joy-joy dance, it was so stunning that neither myself nor the home owner wanted to cover it up. I like to think Milton was looking down from Heaven smiling and feeling proud.

The blue theme is continued on the main floor into the dining room. The art pieces carry the abstract theme ( you can see them reflected in the dining room mirror ). A focal wall and tray ceiling are faux painted gentle metallic shades of the ocean.
