Home Bar Makeover

Home Bar Makeover

Home bars are meant for pleasure. Whether it’s enjoying a romantic evening for two, relaxing after a long day at work, or hosting a party for friends. Visually, it should be a pleasure as well. This make over certainly is. Inspired from an art piece hung in the bar area, this is an extreme make over. The bar counter and bar cabinetry were all originally a dark wood-stained finish. The feel was more men’s cigar club. The new look is bright, fun, flirty, and a balance between elegant and quirky. Let’s dive into this makeover:

Before and After:

Close up view of the Back bar Cabinet :
Gotta admit, it's fun to fling paint ! Theses door fronts were removed and the paint was flung on outside

Close up view of the Front Bar inset:
Didn't have the luxury of flinging these insets outside. Instead, the room was wrapped in plastic tarp and using two paint brushes, the paint was spattered by tapping one brush handle onto the brush with the paint :

Even the metal foot bar was given new life with metal paint. The top counters were painted to look like black marble and then given a few layers of counter top epoxy for durability. Preferably, this would be done offsite. However, in this case as in doing built in cabinets , the counter top had to be poured onsite.

Even a side wine storage cabinet received the paint spatter look:

The bun feet of the front bar cabinet already had the marquis cut ins. They re now painted to resemble the red and yellow marquis pattern glass in the back storage cabinet

Besides paint spatter, I love painting with glitter. This piece was painted originally by the homeowner at a sip and paint party. I've repainted it in cornucopia of glitter colors and then epoxied the canvas for both look and protection.

It now shimmers on the bar room wall:

it's Turtle Time!

It’s Turtle Time!

Whether its raising funds for marine turtles or using the same phrase as slang for hanging out with your friends… turtle time is now! I’m blessed to have dozens and dozens of these adorable, armored reptiles on my SW Florida property. As an artist, I love when customer’s request turtles to be included in their artwork. So today, it’s a celebration of these flipper footed friends:

Sea turtles are much loved here in SW Florida and are protected by State and Federal Law (Federal Endangered Species Act of 1973 and Florida's Marine Turtle Protection Act (379.2431, Florida Statutes)

Sea turtles are the focal point of this side table:

Even when they aren't the focal point, adding a few turtles into a mural is a fun touch:

Some turtles are kind of famous:

Turtles can have loads of personality:

Manatee Appreciation Day

Manatee Appreciation Day

Wednesday March 30th, 2022 was Manatee Appreciation Day. It was serendipitous that on that same day I just happened to be painting manatees within an underwater mural. We love our sweet sea cows here in SW Florida. They are gentle, peaceful, herbivores incapable of attacking with their teeth.  Swimming with manatees is a delightful past time here in Florida. I was thrilled to spend time swimming and playing with a baby manatee on my birthday adventures a few years back. Sadly, these loving sea mammals are endangered. In part because their food resources are diminishing. Manatees are Federally protected, and state protected.

The Florida Manatee Recovery Plan was developed as a result of the Endangered Species Act and is coordinated by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (FWS).

In October of 1989, Florida’s Governor and Cabinet directed the state’s wildlife agency to work with 13 “key” manatee counties in Florida to reduce injuries and deaths. These 13 counties were: Brevard, Broward, Citrus, Collier, Dade, Duval, Indian River, Lee, Martin, Palm Beach, St. Lucie, Sarasota, and Volusia. Over the years, these 13 county governments have worked with the state to develop site-specific boat speed zones to reduce the likelihood of watercraft collisions and to implement comprehensive manatee protection plans (MPP) for each county. Other conservation measures deemed important to saving manatees include: research addressing biology, mortality, population and distribution, behavior, and habitat of manatees; implementation of management plans; posting of regulatory speed signs and levying of fines for excess speeds in designated areas; manatee education and public awareness programs; and public acquisition of critical habitat and creation of sanctuaries.

Some say that the manatee isn’t cute. I totally disagree. Their sweet gentle inquisitive nature shows through their delicate small eyes.

When painting the mural, I knew I would want to include manatees. I specifically chose the position of these 2 within the mural from my experience in Homosassa. The mother lingers back and allows the baby upfront to play and check out the humans swimming about:

A little sneak peek of more of the mural. I’ll be uploading more in future articles:

The mural itself was inspired by students at Trafalgar Middle School wishing to leave their mark on their beloved school. Painted within the cafeteria /assembly room it now joins in with a previous mural of the 3d Bull shark :

Here’s the link to my magical day swimming with a baby manatee:
